2017-18 Ashes Series in Australia
Inspection Report - Perth

Following the Adelaide Test Match, the third Ashes Test will also be part of history, as the final ever Ashes match at the world-famous WACA. Love it or hate it, the WACA is steeped in history and has the feel of an old-fashioned cricket stadium, a lovely change between the Adelaide Oval and MCG either side of it.

Perth is the capital of Western Australia, the nation's largest state. Sitting on the banks of the Swan River, it is one of Australia's most distinctive and beautiful cities, with a laid-back pace of life and lots to explore.

Howzat Travel tours taking in Perth...

The Walkabout Tour (All Five Tests)
The Kookaburra Tour (Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth Tests)
The Billabong Tour (Adelaide & Perth Tests)
The Flinders Tour (Perth, Melbourne & Sydney Tests)

The WACA

The famous WACA ground has played host to some momentous matches in years gone by and still remains one of the most appealing grounds to visit for any cricket fan. Pace and swing bowlers favour the conditions here too, with a bouncy wicket and sea breezes working in their favour.

Throughout its history, the ground has also been used for athletics, Australian rules football, baseball, football, rugby and music concerts.

Howzat Travel seating arrangements will be confirmed later this year...

  • Hospitality - Cricket Club Dining (Platinum tours upgrade) –Please see our general inspection page for details.
  • Platinum (Platinum & Gold tours)
  • Silver (Red tours)
  • Bronze (White tours)

* Seating allocation subject to change. Stadium map to be provided when released by Cricket Australia.

Hotels

Howzat Travel will be using six properties for our customers' stay in Perth.

As well as walking between the hotels, the stadiums and the city centre, all visitors to Perth can make use of the free CAT buses that service the city.

Hyatt Regency - Platinum tours - Hotel website

The Hyatt Regency is located off Adelaide Terrace, just a five-minute walk from the WACA and a short walk from the Swan River ferry service that will take you to many of the local attractions Perth has to offer.

In line with the worldwide Hyatt Regency product, this extremely luxurious hotel has all the amenities you would expect in-room from a 5* hotel. The hotel boasts well-appointed spacious rooms, showers over baths, a lovely decor and plenty of wardrobe space as well as free internet throughout.

Within the complex of the hotel there is a choice of two bars, with one around the cafe restaurant in the lobby and a sports bar on the lower level with a lovely terraced area. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the Cafe restaurant, while there is also the option to eat at the coffee shop or the Oriental restaurant on the lower level.

Just outside along Adelaide Terrence are a range of options to eat and drink after a hot day at the cricket. This is also where to find ATMs, newsagents and shops.

Pan Pacific - Blue tours - Hotel website

Located on Adelaide Terrace in East Perth on the banks of the Swan River, the Pan Pacific will be home to our Blue tourists in Perth. The hotel is a short walk from the Swan River ferry service at the Bell Tower, Barrack Street, where you can catch ferries to many of the local attractions and recommended places to visit.

This luxurious 486-room property is surrounded by scenic vistas of the Swan River and lush historic gardens. The hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool, gym and spa.

The air-conditioned hotel rooms all feature LCD televisions with local and cable channels, wired and wireless high-speed internet access (charges apply) and a digital safe. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the lobby.

The hotel has two excellent restaurants, Montereys and Origins, both located on Lobby level. Across the road you will find Fenians Irish pub which offers regular live entertainment.

Holiday Inn - Blue tours - Hotel website

On Hay Street in central Perth, a 30-minute walk from the WACA or a short transfer, the Holiday Inn is ideally located for local eateries and the beautiful Elizabeth Quay.

All rooms are well-appointed and spacious that have recently been refurbished in late 2016. Smart TVs and nice decor finish off the ambience of a lovely hotel.

Within the hotel there is a street-front bar and restaurant, both of which are very popular with guests and have lovely atmospheres. The hotel provides passes for a local gym, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. There is also a spacious and comfortable lounge area and the hotel offers high-speed internet throughout (charges apply).

Just a five-minute walk away is North Bridge, known for its fantastic food. Staying slightly closer to home, enjoy a range of options on Hay Street and Murray Street.

Travelodge - Red tours - Hotel website

Situated close to the Perth CBD on Hay Street, Travelodge Perth is nestled in an excellent location, close to the major shopping areas, and a short stroll from the beautiful Swan River. Directly outside the hotel is the free Red CAT bus stop.

The comfortable hotel rooms are air-conditioned and feature satellite TV, radio, wireless internet (charges apply) and safes. Downstairs you will find Armada Restaurant and Bar, which is open seven days a week for breakfast ($18 continental, $24 for full buffett) and dinner. A limited amount of complimentary Wi-Fi is available each day in the lobby.

The hotel also offers a gym which is available 24 hours.

Ibis - Red tours - Hotel website

Located on Murray Street in the West End, Ibis Perth sits just 300m from the Murray and Hay Street shopping malls and is surrounded by bars, cafes and restaurants.

Featuring 192 air-conditioned rooms all with satellite/cable TV, radio and wireless internet (charges apply), the Ibis is in a great location for our tourists. Complimentary internet access is available in the lobby. The hotel bistro serves meals each evening alongside the Rubix Bar which offers meals and drinks.

Quality Hotel Ambassador - White tours - Hotel website

A 10-minute walk from the WACA, or 25 minutes across the river to the new Perth Stadium, the Ambassador sits on Adelaide Terrace, a street aligned with plenty of bars and restaurants.

The rooms are all comfortable with all the necessary amenities you would expect. The hotel restaurant, Cafe 196, does good breakfasts and dinners, and also offer a food-to-go service, allowing you to eat in your room if you desire. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

We would recommended Fenian's Irish Bar and the Grosvenor pub during your stay in the Ambassador, both are very close by and tend to be popular among the travelling contingent!

Travel from Airport

A taxi from the airport will set you back between $20-30 and will take no more than 20 minutes. Or hop on the Bus Route 380, to Adelaide Terrace before Hill Street, which should cost less than $10 but will take just over 40 minutes. This route runs from Terminals 1 & 2 every 30 minutes.

Things to do in and around Perth

Travel around Perth on one of the three free CAT bus services - the ideal way to get your bearings.
Visit the Bell Tower - also the site of the Swan River ferry service. The Bell Tower is an eyecatching structure and is one of the largest musical instruments in the world. It offers fascinating displays on the famous bells, plus stunning 360° views of the Perth skyline and the Swan River from the sixth floor open air observation deck.
Take a trip to Fremantle - a 20-minute drive or you can catch a ferry from the Bell Tower. Known as 'Freo' by the locals, it has some great bars, restaurants, cafes and shopping. You will also find street entertainment and charming markets at this extremely chilled-out, attractive port city.
Rottnest Island is a short ferry ride from Fremantle, or you could go direct from the Bell Tower in Perth. At 'Rotto', you will find clear, turquoise waters and gorgeous sandy beaches. There are no cars on 'Rotto', so hire a bicycle and explore the beautiful island on two wheels!
Perth's beautiful Kings Park is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world and covers over 400 hectares. It overlooks the city and the Swan River and includes the state's Botanic Garden - home to 300 native plant varieties and 80 species of bird.
Located just across the Swan River from the Bell Tower, Perth Zoo is a great way to spend a long afternoon. Home to over 1,500 animals representing 200 species, here you can see a wonderful array of Australian wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas and dingoes.
AQWA - the Aquarium of Western Australia is located a short distance up the coast at Hilarys Boat Harbour. Here, you can discover the incredible and unique marine life of Western Australia.
A bit further afield, Rockingham is a 40-minute drive south from Perth - an attractive seaside town where you can take a ferry out to Penguin Island or swim with wild dolphins.
