Mon 16th January
Check out of your hotel and transfer to Pune airport for your flight to Delhi. On arrival in Delhi, you will be transferred to your hotel for a two-night stay.

Delhi is India's capital and a major gateway to the country; contemporary Delhi is a bustling metropolis, which successfully combines the ancient and the modern. One of the most historic capitals in the world, Delhi is a treasure trove that reveals the ultimate combination of tradition and trends. The city has seen the rise and fall of many emperors, which have left behind a plethora of monuments that commemorate the grandeur and glory of bygone ages.

The rest of the day is yours to relax and get your bearings.

Tues 17th January
After breakfast, we will head off on a sightseeing tour of Old Delhi.

Old Delhi is the 300-year-old walled city built by Emperor Shah Jehan in 1648 as his capital and named after him. Visit the magnificent Red Fort built of red sandstone. Within its walls are marble palaces and a grand audience chamber, the Diwan-i-Khas, where Moghul emperors held court and the Peacock Throne once stood. Opposite the fort are the black and white onion dome and minarets of the Jama Masjid, the most elegant mosque in India. Drive past Kotla Firoze Shah, ruins of an old fort of the 14th century with the 13 meters high Ashoka Pillar of 3rd BC. Visit Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated in 1948.

We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then in the afternoon we get back on the sightseeing trail, ths time exploring New Delhi.

Visit Humayun’s Tomb, the first great example of a new and distinctive style, which developed to become the hallmark of the Mughal Dynasty. Also visit Qutab Minar (Tower of Victory) – a masterpiece built to establish the might of Islam and the onset of the Muslim rule in India, Drive past the imposing India Gate - a War Memorial Arch, the residence of the President - the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Parliament House and other government buildings.

After our enjoyable day, we will return to the hotel, and the rest of your evening is at leisure.

Wed 18th January
After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and board the coach for our drive to Agra (approx. 205 km / 5 hrs). Upon arrival at Agra we will check in to our hotel.

The city of Agra is globally renowned as the home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the Taj Mahal. The architectural splendour of the mausoleums and forts in Agra is a vivid reminder of the opulence of the legendary Mughal Empire. A pleasant town, with a comparatively easy pace, Agra is known for its superb inlay work on marble and soapstone by artisans who are hereditary craft persons. The city is also famous for gold embroidery. (Please note, the Taj Mahal is currently undergoing some conservation work. This was the case during my own visit, but I did not find it affected the experience - Steve)

Once we have checked in freshened up, we will head off on a sightseeing tour of Agra.

We will visit the Agra Fort – an imposing structure with walls of red sandstone, originally planned as an impregnable military structure by Akbar. It has, over a period of time, acquired all the elegance, lavishness and majesty of an imperial palace. Later visit Taj Mahal. Referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal is the epitome of love, built in white marble by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The monument was commissioned in 1631 and took 20,000 artisans 22 years to complete.

After an afternoon of sightseeing that will stay in your memory forever, we will return to the hotel and have the evening at leisure.

Thurs 19th January
Today, we head off on the next step of the Golden Triangle, making the road trip to Jaipur (approx. 238 km / 7-8 hrs). We will break up the journey by visiting Fatehpur Sikri en route.

Akbar’s abandoned capital, Fatehpur Sikri is located 40 km from Agra and was built in honor of the Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti. It was the Mughal capital for 14 years before it was abandoned due to paucity of water. It is made of red sandstone and combines influences from both Hindu and Mughal architecture.

On arrival at Jaipur, we will head to a local restaurant for lunch, then check in to our hotel for a two-night stay. The rest of your evening is at leisure, the 2nd ODI from Cuttack will be on the TV.

Jaipur is known as the Pink City and is the capital state of Rajasthan. The ‘pink city’ label applies specifically to the old walled quarter of the Rajasthani capital, while in the northeast of the town, glorious palaces and temples, spanning centuries in an assortment of styles, are scattered throughout an otherwise predominantly urban area.

Fri 20th January
Today we explore the sights and sounds of Japiur. In the morning, we head off on an excursion to the Amber Fort.

Visit the fabulous Amber Fort. En-route halt for a photo stop at the intriguing red sandstone Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) - a five-storied wonder with an incredible pyramidal façade, overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes and spires. Crowning the crest of a hill, the Fort offers a view of Maota Lake and the historic old town located at the base of the hill, which formed the early seat of the Amber kings before the fort was made their capital.

We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, the in the afternoon we will go on a sightseeing tour of Jaipur city.

Explore the exquisite City Palace, a synthesis of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, consisting of an overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces. The Museum has a collection of Rajasthani costumes, armory of Mughals and Rajputs including swords of different shapes and sizes with chiseled handles. Also visit the awe-inspiring Jantar Mantar Observatory, a stone astrological and astronomical wonder built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 18th century.

After another unforgettable day of cultural sights, we will return to the hotel. The rest of your evening is at leisure.

Sat 21st January
Today we have an early start, checking out of our hotel and heading to Jaipur airport for our flight to Kolkata. On arrival at Kolkata, we will transfer to our hotel for a four-night stay. The rest of your day is at leisure, for relaxation or to get your bearings and explore this wonderful city.

Sun 22nd January Third IND v ENG ODI
After breakfast and a morning at leisure (or join us for an optional sightseeing walking tour - additional cost), we will make the short walk to Eden Gardens for the third ODI between India and England. After the match, we will return to the hotel.

Mon 23rd January
Today is a full day at leisure, or you can join us for an optional half-day city sightseeing tour (additional cost).

Drive past the Victoria Memorial – supposedly the British Raj's answer to Agra's Taj Mahal, this imposing edifice contains a collection of Victorian memorabilia, including Queen Victoria's Piano; Marble Palace from outside - a palatial 19th century mansion, The Maidan – this enormous park forms the 'lungs' of Kolkata, and offers a fascinating ongoing pageant of the city's life. Nearby is the old British fort, Fort William; Kalighat – an important temple to Kali, the goddess from whom Kolkata supposedly takes its name; drive past Raj Bhavan – this was once the residence of the British Viceroy in India. Not far away are other fine examples of Raj architecture: the Town Hall, Writers' Building (the old East India Company office) and St. John's Church and St. Paul's Cathedral – the most important church of the city was constructed by Bishop Wilson in 1847 and is the first Episcopal Church of the East

Tues 24th January
Today is a full day at leisure, or you can join us for an optional full-day sightseeing boat trip to Barrackpore (additional cost).

We will drive to the jetty and board the cruise from Babughat. Enjoy 15 minutes sailing, enjoying the scenes of both sides of the river, including the old architectural remains on the riverbank. We will disembark at Belur Math Jetty to visit to a Hindu Mission and temples. Once back on the boat. we will enjoy a 1hr15min cruise heading further up the river, and disembark at Barrackpore - the location of the Old British military cantonment. Barrackpore is an old and famous administrative territory and a place of historical significance in many ways. The Indian revolt for independence in 1857 was started here by the legendary martyr Mangal Pandey. After an undoubtedly-fascinating experience, we will board the boat and sail back to the City, en route passing the Dakshineswar Temple.

The rest of your evening is at leisure.
