Post-Test Tour South Island Sightseeing
  • Wednesday 4th December – Hamilton/Christchurch
After breakfast at your hotel, depart Hamilton for Auckland International Airport and your domestic flight to Christchurch. Upon arrival in Christchurch head out on a sightseeing tour of central Christchurch. Highlights include the River Avon, the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery; the Catholic Basilica; Bridge of Remembrance; the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial and the Spanish Mission-inspired New Regent Street. Learn about the effects of the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes and how the city is rebuilding. The tour concludes at your hotel located in the heart of Cathedral Square. Evening at leisure.
  • Thursday 5th December – Christchurch/Omarama
Breakfast at your hotel. Today travel south across the alluvial Canterbury Plains, New Zealand’s chief cropping area then turn inland through Burkes Pass to the Mackenzie Country named after a 19th Century sheep stealer. See the quaint Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo then travel along the shores of glacial Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook Village in the Mt Cook National Park. At the heart of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine region is Mt Cook, at 3754 metres the highest peak in Australasia. Experience the wonder of the National Park, which features 15 peaks and 5 major glaciers. Mt Cook is also known by the Maori name, Aoraki.
After time at Mt Cook Village, retrace your journey along Lake Pukaki then stop in the small rural service town of Omarama for your overnight stay. Your hotel is centrally located in Omarama.
  • Friday 6th December – Omarama/Queenstown
Breakfast at your hotel. At the southern end of the Mackenzie Country the road climbs through bleak rugged hills to the summit of the Lindis Pass before descending into Central Otago. The road follows the mighty Clutha River into recently created Lake Dunstan then through the spectacular Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown. Stop en-route at the Kawarau Bridge to see the dare-devils bungy jumping from the original AJ Hackett site. Nestled among glacier-rounded hills and dramatic rugged mountain peaks, Queenstown is New Zealand’s premier four-season lake and alpine resort. The town centre is situated within walking distance down a hill from the hotel.
  • Saturday 7th December
Breakfast at your hotel. This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour of Queenstown. Highlights include a visit to historic Arrowtown, a quaint village set on the banks of the Arrow River which was once a rip-roaring gold rush town. Time here to sample some of the cafés, galleries and boutiques or you may wish to take a walk to the historic Arrowtown Chinese Settlement. Also see the Edith Cavall Bridge spanning the narrow canyon of the rugged Shotover River; and pretty Lake Hayes. Your tour concludes with a ride on the aerial gondola to Bob’s Peak to see the stunning panoramic views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range. Afternoon at leisure.
  • Sunday 8th December
Day at leisure. Queenstown has a plethora of optional sightseeing activities available from jet-boating on the thrilling Shotover Jet; a jet-boat excursion along the scenic and remote Dart River; winery tours to the premier Central Otago wineries; 4WD tours into unforgettable Skippers Canyon; scenic flights; fly-fishing or if you dare – bungy jumping or tandem sky-diving! Extra cost for optional sightseeing excursions.
  • Monday 9th December – Queenstown/Te Anau
Breakfast at your hotel. Travel around Lake Wakatipu and through Te Anau and the Fiordland National Park to Milford Sound. Fiordland National Park, part of the UNESCO Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area is one of the great wilderness areas of the Southern Hemisphere. The scenery is spectacular with lofty mountains and deep valleys carved out by Ice Age glaciers. There are clear rushing streams and leaping waterfalls set in magnificent native rainforest. At Milford Sound board a comfortable vessel for a cruise down Milford Sound past towering Mitre Peak to the Tasman Sea. Seals and dolphins are often seen in the clear waters of the fiord. Picnic lunch included. At the conclusion of the cruise, re-board the coach and drive back to Te Anau travelling via the Cleddeau Gorge, Homer Tunnel and the lovely Eglinton Valley. Evening at leisure.
  • Tuesday 10th December – Te Anau/Dunedin
Breakfast at your hotel. Depart Te Anau and travel across the rolling farmland of Southland and Otago. A striking feature of this area is the large number of deer farms that are easily seen from the road. The road travels through a number of small country towns before crossing the fast flowing Clutha River and heading north into Dunedin. Sitting at the head of the magnificent Otago Harbour, Dunedin was founded in 1848 by Scottish settlers and envisaged as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’. The influence of its Scottish heritage is still strongly evident. The city is renowned for its educational facilities including Otago University, New Zealand’s first university. Upon arrival see the distinctive Dunedin Railway Station; the University of Otago with its historic blue stone buildings on the banks of the Leith River; and the Octagon which features the historic Town Hall and St Pauls Anglican Cathedral and a statue of the Scottish poet Robbie Burns. Evening at leisure.
  • Wednesday 11th December – Dunedin/Christchurch
Breakfast at your hotel. Departing Dunedin the road climbs sharply over the hills that surround the city. Continuing north there are some lovely views of the coast and the Pacific Ocean. Stop at Moeraki and see the unusually large and spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach then continue on to the coastal town of Oamaru. With many of Oamaru’s old buildings having been constructed with local limestone, the southern part of Oamaru’s main business district ranks as one of New Zealand’s most impressive streetscapes. Continue north and cross the sheep and cropping areas of the fertile Canterbury Plains. The snow-capped Southern Alps can be seen to the West for much of the journey. Upon arrival in Christchurch, proceed to your hotel to check-in. Evening at leisure.
  • Thursday 12th December – Depart Christchurch
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Christchurch International Airport for your flight back to the UK.
