That afternoon, you will go on a walking tour of the local Zulu Village, during which you will visit a family residence where you will be greeted by members of the family and shown around their individual houses. You will also visit one of the local schools, see the students at work in their classrooms or performing song and dance routines. Afterwards you will proceed to visit the local Sangoma (diviner) who is trained in the art of, amongst other things, how to determine ailments. It is believed that the Sangoma can also foresee or predict events. That evening, enjoy dinner in the dining room.

Thursday 9th January

After breakfast, depart on the Isandlwana Tour which starts from the Lodge veranda. After the introduction there will be a tea and coffee break. Accompanied by your tour guide you will then depart in Land Cruisers to the Battlefield of Isandlwana where your lecture begins half way up the hill.

Travel and storytelling blend seamlessly on this compelling journey to the historical battlefields of Kwazulu-Natal. As you stand at the sites of the 1879 Battle of Indlwana and the subsequent skirmish at Rorke’s Drift, your specialist battlefield guide brings the account of 20 000 Zulu warriors armed with traditional weapons confronting British firepower vividly to life.

Enjoy lunch at the Lodge, before the Rorke’s Drift tour where you will have time to walk around the battle museum before the lecture. There is very little walking involved. The lecture concludes around 5pm and guests are then given the opportunity to look around the memorials and graveyard before returning to the Lodge. That evening, enjoy dinner in the dining room.

The Battle of Spionkop was the scene of one of the bloodiest and perhaps, most futile battles fought during the South African War of 1899-1902. This theatre of war, was to bring together three significant, and influential characters from the chapters of modern history, namely, Winston Churchill, a 23 year old war correspondent, Louis Botha who was to become the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910, and a London qualified lawyer, Mahatma Gandhi, who was a stretcher bearer with the volunteer Ambulance Corps.
